LAUNCH OF A NATIONAL
WEB SITE TO PROVIDE BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR ONLINE
DATING USERS
ANTIOCH, CA – A retired law
enforcement officer/licensed private investigator
and a single mom strive to tighten security in the
online dating realm with their new company offering
background checks to online dating users nationwide.
It’s called Romance Reality
Check, where users confirm important information
such as criminal records and address history of
those they meet through online dating sites.
John McCarty and Beth Mallory,
both of Antioch CA, started the web site to protect
those in the online dating environment and to
promote awareness of the risks involved. They
were inspired to join forces in this cause after
discovering both had loved ones deceived by people
met via online dating services. “This person was
so believable” a close friend of Mallory confided,
“I consider myself a sharp person and good judge of
character, but I was totally blindsided”. It was a
similar story for a friend of McCarty’s.
“We hear horror stories all the
time of people being ripped off by con-artists and
people being physically assaulted by someone they
met online. Meeting someone who has a criminal
record or is married also seems to be a fairly
routine occurrence,” said retired police officer and
co-founder McCarty.
Romance Reality Check (RRC) is
backed by Blackhawk Private Investigations, which
turns over background checks within two business
days of the service purchase. Though some of the
information is obtainable online, RRC compiles all
the information, from bankruptcy filings to
professional licenses to criminal record
information, and puts it in one easy-to-read report.
Though some of this information
is obtainable online for those who know the right
places to look, the data is often inaccurate or
out-of-date. “Just because the information is there
doesn’t mean people know how to interpret it or
verify it,” McCarty said. “We use the most
up-to-date databases available”. McCarty is an
experienced background
investigator and a POST certified background
investigator (CA Peace Officer Standards and
Training).
McCarty is able to obtain the
information quickly with special access to
databases. His experience of more than 11 years in
law enforcement and 13 years as a licensed private
investigator allows him to break down and interpret
the information just as fast.
“He’s a perfectionist and
insists on providing the most accurate and detailed
reports possible,” Mallory said of McCarty. “He has
instincts about the information gathered.”
Online dating services
transformed the dating culture when the first site
launched in 1994. Today, hundreds of online dating
sites are available and some are specific to
religion, race and even body type.
According to Jupiter Research,
the average online dating user spends more than $200
each year on these services and estimates consumer
spending on services to reach almost $1 billion by
the end of 2011.
RRC aims to keep the online
dating environment safe and respectable since
alarming statistics have surfaced. For example, in
2007, complaints of online dating services increased
by 73 percent, according to the Better Business
Bureau.
Even the government is taking a
stand in the online dating environment. Both New
Jersey and New York passed the Internet Dating
Safety Act, which requires online dating sites to
publish potential risks, encourage users to follow
safety tips, and disclose whether or not the service
includes background checks.
Though RRC does not guarantee
it will find everything, they ensure clients it will
lead to better decision making about those they meet
on the Internet.
“Remember, knowledge is power!”
